Built by the community.

After years of skate lessons, skate tours and community events across Ghana, we wanted to create a permanent home for the growing skate scene. On December 15, 2021, Freedom Skatepark opened in Accra.  in 30 days with Wonders Around the World, the 500 m² concrete skatepark became a space for people to skate, learn, meet and create. The project was made possible through community support and collaborations with Vans, Off-White™, Daily Paper, SAF Ghana, Limbo Accra, Space Accra and many individuals who believed in the project. The park incorporated Fawohodie, the Ghanaian Adinkra symbol representing independence, freedom and emancipation.

Virgil / Freedom Legacy

Virgil Abloh was an early supporter of Surf Ghana and played an important role in helping us bring the vision of Freedom to life.
He also created and donated the Freedom logo to Surf Ghana Collective, giving the project a visual identity that remains part of its legacy today.
From amplifying Ghana’s skate scene internationally to connecting the project with collaborators and supporting fundraising initiatives, his contribution became part of Freedom’s history. Freedom was created to give young people a place to express themselves, meet others and imagine new possibilities. That spirit continues today.
Freedom Today

The community kept moving. When the original Freedom Skatepark closed, the community continued. Surf Ghana rebuilt skate access through DIY obstacles, regular skate sessions and the opening of the Freedom Lab in 2024. Today, Freedom continues to provide a place for skateboarding, learning, connection and youth-led culture in Accra. Our long-term ambition remains the same: to secure permanent skate infrastructure for the next generation of Ghanaian skateboarders.

Not only a place to skate.
Skateboarding meets culture. Freedom has always existed at the intersection of skateboarding and Ghana’s wider creative scene. Photography, film, music, fashion, design and visual culture naturally form part of the community around the space. We create opportunities for skateboarders to meet photographers, filmmakers, designers, musicians and other creatives and for collaborations to grow organically from those encounters.

Learning and opportunity
From learning to leading. Our goal is to create pathways for young people to progress within the skate ecosystem. A first skate lesson can become years of practice. A young skater can become a coach. An interest in documenting skateboarding can develop into photography or filmmaking. Producing an event can become professional experience. Through coaching, mentorship, workshops and community participation, Freedom creates opportunities to learn both on and off the board.

School and Community Groups
Skate with your community. Freedom works with schools, youth organizations and community groups to introduce skateboarding in an accessible and supportive environment. Sessions can combine skate instruction, demonstrations, creative workshops and community activities.
